The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says May's global passenger demand (measured in revenue passenger kilometres, or RPKs) rose 6.1 per cent compared to the same month in 2017, which was a slight pickup from six per cent year-over-year growth for April 2018. Capacity climbed 5.9 per cent and load factor rose 0.1 percentage point to 80.1 per cent.

Virgin Australia will begin new direct air services between Hobart, Tasmania and Perth, Western Australia, becoming the only airline to offer the route. From 17 September, the carrier will operate a thrice-weekly return service using B737 aircraft.
