Australia halves entry totals as more people seek permission to leave
- BTN News
- Monday, 05 July 2021
Australia is to halve the number of people permitted to enter the island nation because of, mainly, two things: A sub-standard Covid vaccine rollout and sporadic lockdowns and restrictions needed to curb the spread of the Delta variant.
Prime minister Scott Morrison said: “The delta strain is more contagious and so we’re seeking to take precautionary steps to reduce the risk.”
Effective July 14, the number of people allowed to enter the country each week will drop from 6,070 to 3,035, enraging many of the estimated 34,000 Australians stranded overseas.
Residents trying to return 'home' now will face restricted flight options and may have to pay business-class ticket prices as entry caps prevent airlines from flying at full capacity.
One report said ticket prices for London, UK to Sydney flights in July have hit A$38,000.
Federal Health minister Greg Hunt has however issued a warning to commercial airlines seeking to increase ticket prices due to the cap.
"I hope that there is nobody who seeks a commercial advantage from difficult circumstances. That is a strong, clear message," he said.
Just exactly how else airlines can make money on flights under the cap was not made clear - and some carriers could decide to stop passenger flights to Australia while caps are in place.
Outbound falling
Meanwhile, there has been an increase in the number of Australian citizens and residents applying to travel overseas, with 34,616 exemptions sought in June, up from 23,836 in May.
14,522 exemptions were granted in June, up from 11,879 in May, according to a Guardian report.
On the other side, 10,147 applications were rejected in June, compared with an average 6,000 a month in the first 14 months of the pandemic.
Australia shut its borders in March 2020, imposing two weeks of hotel quarantine on those arriving in the country and banning outbound travel subject to limited exemptions such as critical business and compassionate grounds.
Since the start of the pandemic, 363,796 applications have been made for travel exemptions and 171,029 exemptions have been granted, the Guardian said.
