Qantas loads up, but it’s making less

Qantas’s financial results show current low fares and yields – as much as 21 per cent lower than last year - are not being offset by growing group passenger numbers.

Traffic figures just released show group passenger numbers increased 4.6 per cent July vs July 08 to a monthly record of 3.51million.

but domestic yields were 12.3 per cent lower on last year and international yields 21.4 per cent down.
An airline spokeswoman said yields had stabilised and absolute numbers were tracking sideways.

"Group yields are still significantly down compared to the preceding period but they are not getting worse," she said.

Group load factors rose 0.7 per cent to 82.9 per cent. Load factors on Qantas mainline international flights rose 1.3 per cent to 85.6 per cent, despite a 24.2 per cent fall in passenger numbers (equal to 166,000 fewer passengers).

On domestic routes, Qantas and affiliate Jetstar both managed to increase load factors by 1.4 per cent, with Qantas at 83.5 per cent and Jetstar 81.6 per cent, though regional carrier QantasLink loads dropped 1.5 points to 71.4 per cent.
